Every family has their thing. Some families like to go fishing, some like to travel cross country in an RV. My family likes to eat, and more than anything, we like to eat out. It’s not that Mom’s food is bad, in fact, it’s very, very good, but our family seems to revel in the excitement of picking a new restaurant and going to see what all the fuss is about. And Durham is just the place for us, with restaurants on every street and corner. Just the other night, we decided to try Anotherthyme on North Gregson Street, and we were not disappointed. Although, admittedly, we’re there for the food, but being the bunch of artistic, opinionated people we are, my family loves noting the overall ambience of a place, the color on the walls, the lighting, the silverware. Our verdict: Anotherthyme’s a hit. It’s a snazzy restaurant run by someone who knows how to make food a true art. Our table was a flurry of forks: “Hey, that looks good, can I grab a bite?” We’re not bashful eaters, and I’m pretty sure our waiter appreciated our enthusiasm for good food.  We left satisfied, body and soul, having experienced together a meal that brought out the best in us, laughing and sharing.

Durham is rich with restaurants and indeed has gained national notoriety for the diversity and quality of these eateries. Rue Cler is a personal favorite, a Parisian restaurant located on East Chapel Hill Street. I’m a sucker for their omelet with gruyere cheese, tomatoes, and asparagus. Dad first introduced it to me one afternoon for lunch, and since then, I’ve been hooked. Toast, right down on West Main Street, is another great spot for lunch, serving Italian sandwiches. Southern cuisine, Thai, Indian, Mexican, Brazilian, Japanese, Irish, it’s all here, in our hometown of Durham, North Carolina. And that’s incredible when you stop to think about it. Our Durham is cooking up something special for our state, and we should get out there and taste it.
